Backtesting Developer

Python backtesting development for reproducible strategy research, explicit execution assumptions and transparent results and limitations.

Build a reproducible research pipeline

A backtest should record its input data, strategy parameters, code version and time range. Data preparation includes timestamp alignment, missing-bar checks and a clear approach to instrument changes. For pairs trading, both legs must be aligned and the hedge-ratio estimation window separated from evaluation.

Make fill assumptions visible

Vectorized calculations can explore ideas quickly; event-driven simulation can model order timing and portfolio state in more detail. Neither removes modeling risk. Fees, slippage, funding where applicable and the rule for filling an order must be documented alongside the output.

Evaluate beyond a single return figure

Useful reports include an equity curve, drawdowns, exposure and a trade ledger. Separate development and evaluation periods help expose overfitting. Parameter sensitivity and walk-forward checks can show how dependent a result is on selected settings. No result should be described as live performance without live evidence.

Potential project deliverables

  • Versioned data and parameter configuration
  • Strategy simulation with documented cost assumptions
  • Trade ledger, equity and drawdown reports
  • Evaluation methodology and known limitations

The final scope, timeline and cost follow a review of your requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can a good backtest predict future returns?

No. A backtest describes a historical simulation under stated assumptions. It can contain data bias or unrealistic fills, and future market conditions can differ.

Trading involves risk, including loss of capital. Backtest results do not guarantee future trading performance. Development and educational content are not investment advice. Read the trading-risk disclaimer.
